Please, please, please make sure you own the following:
Dashiki – yes, I know, traditionally a dashiki is a garment for males. But it’s joined the 21st century and got a new feminine lease of life.
Think of it as the Afrocentric version of the tunic and pair it with leggings , skinny jeans, a pencil skirt, or nothing at all if you’re feeling brave!
It’s a great option when the dress code is smart casual. Just think of all the great jewellery you could use to accent it! And do me a personal favour, add some heels to that!
Maxi dress – think summer, bare skin, flowing fabric, bang on trend – gorgeous!
There’s something so pretty and feminine about dresses. Even better, who doesn’t look good in a dress?
There’s a dress out there for everyone regardless of their shape or personal style.
The other thing I love about wearing a dress is that it lessens the hassle of trying to mix and match separates. Put your dress on and you’re good to go!
I’ll even let you wear your flats with this one – as long as they’re Afrofabulous!
Kaftan – think comfort as well as style. They come in all manner of fabrics, it’s a matter of finding one that works for you. Although traditionally the kaftan had no sleeves, nowadays they do come in long-sleeved versions which I think gives it a whole new sexy twist.
Statement jewellery – so you don’t have to go out and get everything you can lay your hands on. Find something you really love that is either versatile enough to be worn with multiple outfits or so special that as soon as you put it on you go to your “happy place”.
My thing is bracelets. I’m too small to pull off huge earrings and necklaces tend to make me itch so I have all manner of bangles, bracelets and arm pieces that I use to dress up my outfits.
So there you have it, the basic pieces of African fashion that you should have in your closet!
Just so you know, all the clothes pictured here are available at Afrawear.com – assuming they haven’t already sold out. Go on over and grab yourself something!
See you soon!
